Love Your Greens Challenge
Hello Everyone! I am sitting here eating a grapefruit instead of the leftover cherry chocolate gelato in the freezer, so how good this competition is for me?? :)
Anyways.
So I decided to try and join this little month long challenge:
The Love Your Greens Challenge
(see what I mean about me and bandwagons?)
I figure it can only help my health and weight loss goals to give it a go. As I will be on the road for 2/3 of may, this will be tricky. Is it bad I am trying to figure out how to take my vitamix on the road?
Just thought I'd share if anyone wants to join me. Supposedly they will even send the grocery list for it to help it be easier.
Anyone interested?

Ready, Steady, GO!
So the race officially begins tomorrow!!! Woohooooooo! Remember to weigh yourself and write down your weight, as you will need your starting weight to calculate your percent body weight loss from here on out.
Also, I'm trying to find a template that makes you feel inspired to go outside for a walk/jog/stroll/run/bike/some sort of movement, etc. I am sure there are better templates out there so I will continue my search, but in the meantime this is a bit better than before...right?

Fitness Websites
Hello everyone! I am not a member of your ward, but am in the Marble Cliff ward. Since I don't know any of you personally if you are interested in keeping in closer touch with me I do use a few websites. I use www.myfitnesspal.com, www.fitbit.com, and http://nikeplus.nike.com/plus/profile/melodypharmon/. My user id is melodypharmon on all of them. Fitbit is a neat pedometer that I have used for the past few years, so if you have one feel free to add me! I am looking forward to this!
Also, is anyone interested in getting a group to get together to go walking/jogging once a week? I want to go to different metro parks in the city.

Kale Salad
Short post but wanted to share cuz I made one today & it's one of my fav's recently. It's a kale salad I saw on this Engine 2 documentary on Netflix. It's really good for you cuz I found out kale is super awesome - basically blows every other leafy green out of the water when it comes to nutrition or something like that. Kale by itself has a very cabbagey taste to it, which I don't care for raw, but with the "dressing" you can't really taste it.
1 large bunch of kale (use the whole thing, it'll fill the bowl & you'll think you have too much, but once you add the avo. & everything, it comes down in size considerably.)
2 avocados (ripe, obviously)
1 lemon
garlic salt
wash the kale very well. I put mine in a bowl & let it fill with water, swishing the entire bunch around before I do each leaf individually under running water as I pull the leafy part off the stem like you would chard. It's very sandy for some reason & if you aren't meticulous with this part, you'll get grit & it ruins the entire thing (though kale is hearty enough you could rinse & try again if you really want to). Once that's done, try to get as much of the moisture off as possible (I'm not above using a clean dish towel or paper towels) so your "dressing" sticks & doesn't turn watery. It's not nearly as yummy if all the good stuff pools at the bottom.
"infuse" (as the Engine 2 guy calls it) your kale with the avocados & lemon juice. This is why I've been putting "dressing" in quotations ... not really a dressing in the traditional sense. Basically, pit & peel your avo's & dump them in the bowl with the kale. Squeeze the juice of your lemon in, being careful of seeds & squish it all together in your hands as if you're a kid with playdoh. Mash it up until it's covering all the kale (you'll see what I mean about it reducing in size now) & your hands are green. Mmmmm. Tasty!
Add garlic salt to cut a bit of the acidity from the lemon juice, mash more / toss the salad & taste to see if you need to add more. I suppose you could do this part in the beginning with the avo's & lemon juice to save yourself from having to wash your hands twice, but I do it after cuz I'm afraid of getting carried away with the salt. I dunno. Whatever works for you.
In my house, this much feeds 2 people (cuz I'm nice for even sharing at all & could eat it as an entire meal all my myself) but I suppose if you're above sticking someone with your fork to keep them out of your bowl & it's only a side dish, you could stretch it a bit further. Well there you have it! My short post that turned into a long one. Oh well. Hope you try it & love it as much as I do!

Me and Bandwagons
So I was really, really hoping someone would do this! So I was super excited by Michelle's email!
I am pretty, maybe a lot, competitive and so this little friendly competition is SO motivating. I want to say good for me too, but I'm feeling slightly dependent on it now :)
It has been good in that each time I feel like I pick up at least one major thing that is a healthy lifestyle change. Yeah!
I am a mom of three boys. I have a husband who can't gain weight, which I've decided is a good thing. He eats anything without complaint (even things I've made that I won't eat) and is always up for any of my healthy scheming and plotting. We're definitely on the whole foods bandwagon right now.
Recently joined the green smoothie band wagon. Kind of a liking it. We have one a few times a week. I made one up today I thought turned out well and the kids liked and asked for more.
Here's the recipe:
2ish cups of spinach
1 cup of water
half a banana
half a bag of frozen mangos
2 dates (take out the pits)
a couple scoops of orange juice concentrate
I am kind of picky when it comes to green smoothies. I don't like a strong banana flavor. PB does not belong in a drink (in my honest opinion), and strawberries and spinach don't go because brown is just not appetizing.
Are you picky when it comes to smoothies? Do you drink green smoothies? Other smoothies? Any smoothies?
